We headed south on our college tours in early March to visit the historic colleges of Morehouse and Spelman in Atlanta, Georgia. Our tour guide at Spelman highlighted academic programs and explained the history of this historically black college for women. We continued to Birmingham, AL where we met with a current Public Health student attending the University of Alabama, Birmingham and learned about the great resources for students interested in health sciences. Onward, we spent the night in Tuscaloosa, AL, a university town and home to the University of Alabama. Our custom tour at Alabama began with a private golf cart tour of campus. We enjoyed visits with a faculty member in the Theater Department where we toured the facilities and learned about their recent productions. A wonderful student guide led us through the innovative Engineering Buildings where we learned about Aersoapce Engineering and saw the labs were they test equipment to use in outer space! We enjoyed lunch with a member of the Admissions team and then toured the Hillel Building and had coffee with a group of students who told us about student life on campus.
Following our college visits, we joined a delegation of San Franciscans in Montgomery, AL to learn about the Civil Rights movement. We had impactful visits to the National Museum of Peace and Justice, the Civil Rights Memorial, and the Legacy Museum. We heard speakers from the Southern Poverty Law Center, and met with residents of the community who shared stories about current life in Montgomery.
